COVER YOUR BASES: 2025'S DIVERSE ROMANCE COVER TRENDS
Since last year, I've been checking out all the lists predicting trends for the upcoming year. I do this every year, but I rarely see trends that include AA and IR romances. Don't get me wrong—these lists are helpful, but they often miss the nuances in some genres. So, I wanted to highlight a few trends that'll impact a wider range of romance covers this year.
Illustrated Covers: A few years ago, authors like Jasmine Guillory and Talia Hibbert revived the trend of illustrated covers. These vibrant designs really resonate with audiences, especially in romance, capturing characters of color and curvy protagonists better than stock images. We'll see more of these gorgeous creations in 2025—and I’m totally here for it!
Dark Motifs: We're in our emo era...Imagine timeless art with a dash of mystery. Dark motifs are adding a chic twist, especially in the diverse romance genre. New authors are hopping on this trend, bringing fresh perspectives and challenging traditional romance cover themes.
Discreet Covers: Once reserved for special editions and alternate cover art, discreet covers are now trending in book design. These covers feature subtle imagery and minimalist vibes, capturing the book's essence without giving too much away. This gives them a mysterious and sleek look that hooks readers (like me!). Plus, they look pretty when done right! 😉 Readers love these covers, so they'll continue to gain popularity.
Generative AI: AI images are changing book cover design. Despite debates, they're handy for creating diverse characters and filling gaps in traditional stock photos. Many designers, including me, were skeptical at first (kind of still am tbh). But honestly, I get it. Diverse romance covers often showcase AI character images since there aren't many stock photo choices. It makes sense, and we just have to roll with the punches. AI is definitely here to stay.
Symbolism: Symbolism in book design uses powerful imagery and abstract artwork to draw readers in. One of my favorite examples is The Kingmaker by Kennedy Ryan—it captures attention and conveys the book's essence perfectly. As a designer who loves the “less is more” approach, I lean toward polished and clean designs. But symbolism covers can be as extreme or as minimal as needed – and we'll see this trend grow, especially with newer authors.
Typography: We're seeing a shift from whimsical script to contemporary serif fonts, giving many romance covers a cleaner, modern look in 2025. Subdued elements and delicate designs are trending across diverse romance covers. Street lit, on the other hand, sticks to its bold embossing, metallics, bright colors, and embellished elements. This genre thrives on its unique, vibrant style and rarely follows the trends.
